HP LaserJet Printing on Unix

J. M. Bishop, 5/17/01

The new HP Color LaserJet 4500 printer and the new HP LaserJet 4050 printer in the Physics Department office are available for general use from Macintosh, pc, and Unix environments. The HP LaserJet 4Si has been relocated to room 205 NSH. The new Color LaserJet 4500 has taken the identity of the old Color LaserJet in all network properties. The old Color LaserJet is in Kathy Burgess’s office and will not have transparency available. The printer names are Physcps (Unix: physcps.phys.nd.edu), deptlj4k (Unix: deptlj4k.phys.nd.edu) and Dept205 Laserjet 4si (Unix: dept4si.phys.nd.edu). The labeling of the color printer is to not have the word "color" obvious on the network. The color printer is not for general university use. The color printer will not be made available from the cluster Suns, but can be available from departmental Suns.

The upper tray of the LJ 4050 and lower tray the 4Si are normally loaded with departmental letterhead paper. The LJ 4050 and the 4Si can both print duplex (2-sided). Tray 2 of the color printer is normally loaded with transparency stock, with paper in Tray 3. Tray 1 is a special feed tray and is normally closed and empty, thus falling thru to Tray 3 for paper. It appears that the new color printer will not accidentally print on transparency, a definite improvement, since the transparency stock costs $0.75 for each sheet. For black & white transparencies, please use the copier, as that is much cheaper. The printing cost on the color printer is such that one need not worry if a black & white file is accidentally sent to the color printer; the cost there when no color is used is close to the 4Si cost. Both new printers have Cancel buttons, so that misunderstood postscript jobs can be stopped at the printer.

On Unix, the color printer must be configured as 2 queues, one for each tray - paper or transparency. The 4050 and 4Si must also be configured for multiple queues, according to how many options are desired: regular, letterhead, and duplex. Since the new color printer took the same identity as the old color printer, it has taken over the physcps queues on the Sun cluster printer list. The queues on the Suns for the 4Si have been renamed to NIEUW205 and NIEUW205-Dup (for duplex). The LJ4050 has been added to the Sun queues as NIEUW225 and NIEUW225-Dup (for duplex). Note that OIT decided to change the spelling of the queues for 225.

IBM AIX completely supplies all configuration options. Any queues to the color printer will continue to work correctly without change. To add a queue, use Smit, to Print Spooling, and Add Print Queue; select HP JetDirect, then Laserjet 4 and postscript. You need not configure as a bootp server. To make it accept both text and postscript, go to Change/show Print Queue Characteristics, to Printer Setup, and select Auto detect of file type. For tray selection, go to default print job characteristics. For the LJ 4050 set the paper source to lower tray, and set duplex mode for your duplex queue. For the transparency queue on the color printer, set the paper source to "upper tray".
