Mac_on_VAX File Server
							3/20/98, JMB

Mac_on_VAX is a directory created on DU03 ON UNDHD0 under the [DZERO]
directory and served from the VAX with Pathworks for Macintosh. DU03 is
a 9 Gb disk with no quotas. There are subdirectories under Mac_on_VAX
where VMS puts the necessary Mac application hooks; these have MSAF$ in
the directory names and do not show up on your Mac. DO NOT CHANGE
ANYTHING THERE. You may create directories/folders on it from your Mac,
but not VMS. Files that you put there from VMS will not have these hooks,
and thus the Mac cannot see them. You may access files put there from
your Mac directly from VMS or Unix (via NFS). However, since a normal
Mac Word file will have a lot of gibberish (formatting info) in it, you
need to save it on Mac_on_VAX as text only if you intend to use it from
the VMS/Unix side. You may put any Mac files or applications on Mac_on_VAX.
If you have a VMS/Unix file that you want your Mac to use, you must ftp
it to your Mac with Fetch, even if you are putting it directly on Mac_on_VAX.
DU03 is normally backed up as part of the usual biweekly backup of the
VMS disks.

To get to the Mac_on_VAX file server, in the Chooser select
Appleshare and the HEP zone. Then select Mac_on_VAX as you would any
other served Mac disk. You must then give it your VMS username and
password. If your VMS password is more than 8 characters, you will need to
get the VMS UAM from Mac_on_VAX and put it into a new folder named
"AppleShare Folder" in the System folder of your Mac. To do this, you
will have to change your VMS password to 8 characters or less, connect to
Mac_on_VAX and copy the VMS UAM to your Mac. Then change your password
back. Now when you use Appleshare on your Mac, it will prompt your for
using the normal Appleshare UAM or the VMS UAM. Use the VMS UAM only
when connecting to Mac_on_VAX. For all other Appleshare use the normal
Appleshare UAM. When you change your password, Mac_on_VAX will dismount.
