Using NCD Xterminals on UNDHEP
							JMB, 6/22/98

On UNDHEP systems, the NCD xterminals correctly start Xsessions
on VMS and SGI systems. On the IBMs, once logged in, the keyboard map
is scrambled until you reboot your xterminal. For primarily IBM sessions,
you should use the local NCD window manager. Windows from any type of system
may be opened on the xterm, no matter what window manager you are using.

To use a local window manager on an NCD xterm, press the 2 setup
keys on the VMS keyboards or the break key (last top right) on the Unix
keyboards. This brings up the NCD console window. To start a local window
manager, click and hold the WindowMgr label and slide to the NCD Window Manager
and release the button. Then in the Terminals menu start new terminal sessions
to whatever nodes by selecting the protocol for connection (usually TCP).
Once you are logged in, you must set your display in each terminal window
to your xterm before running Netscape, Paw or xclock:

> setenv DISPLAY xtermname.hep.nd.edu:0

Customize your window manager by looking at the setup options and making
changes as desired. In the Setup Parameters, select the Auto Save File
button so that your changes are saved.

If you want a familiar DECwindows or SGI 4Dwm session, do NOT open
the console, rather in the window that comes up, select a node name, if
there is a list or type it in and select the protocol. For DEC systems,
usually give the DECnet node name and select NCDnet protocol. For SGI,
select its full name and TCP protocol. I usually run DECwindows from our
local boot node and then pop up windows on several of our systems. I have
command files/scripts on each host to pop up a window from that node.
These are on VMS, DU00:[BISHOP]HXTERM.COM, and on Unix /u6/bishop/hxterm.
Note that DECwindows will not start if the NCD Console window is open at all
- if there, select Close under the Console menu. You can reopen the Console
window with the Setup keys once the DEC window manager has started.

For DECwindows, you set the access to the screen from the Session
Manager window, Options menu, Security, and enter DECnet * * and tcpip * *.
This way any node you want can display on it. If you use the NCD window
manager, go to the Setup menu of the console window, and select Setup
Parameters, and Access control and enter these items. Also in the Setup
Parameters, select the Auto Save File button so that your changes are saved.
Doing this last item would be a good idea even if you run DECwindows.

Changes in the configuration may also be done directly in the
configuration files, which require system privileges. This is where the
automatic start of DECwindows is done on selected NCD xterms. If you want
something that you cannot find in the setup menus, ask Jim to see if it
can be done in the NCD configuration files.
