Subj:	New Campus Dialup Service

The Office of Information Technologies and the Telecommunications
Department are pleased to announce the new campus dialup service. The
old modems and access servers have been replaced with two Cisco AS5300
access servers.
Each new server supports 94 dial-in channels. The new dialup service
has 188 available modems, increased from 128 modems in the old service.

In addition to providing more connections, all of the new modems support
high-speed connections. The new modem pool supports speeds from 2400 to
33.6K and in the near future the modems will support the new 56K
standard, V.90. In addition, new technology and digital phone trunks
allow the new access servers to answer calls much more quickly.

For those who use the dialup service with terminal emulator software,
the new service will continue to support the same features as the old
service, particularly regarding vt100 telnet and tn3270.

The new dialup service continues to use AFSID and password authentication.

A new policy will place a maximum time limit on a single session of 8
hours. In our efforts to give all customers a fair chance at access
during peak usage hours, we may further decrease this time limit periodically.

The main phone number for the new service is 631-4792. The three other
existing phone numbers will continue to work with the new service. Since
all lines in the new service are capable of all speeds there is no
longer a distinction between which phone number to call.

The upgrade of the general campus dialup service does not affect the HP
administrative dialup service.

Mainframe access via tc1.nd.edu and the IBM 7171 controller (used by St.
Mary's Library to access the IBM mainframe) will be terminated on the
same date as the MACL Libraries conversion from NOTIS to Aleph. This
date is tentatively set for late December 1998 or early January 1999.

Please contact the OIT Help Desk at 631-8111 if you need assistance with
the new campus dialup service.
