UND HEP VAX Restart Procedures
							JMB, 10/15/98

Nominal procedures for getting the HEP VAX cluster up after it goes
down for power or airconditioning problems. Be sure the boot node,
usually UNDHD0, is up and has started DECnet before attempting to
boot the satellite VAXstations. If the boot node has been down for
a while, halt the VAXstations before booting the boot node.
(See HELPND SHUTDOWN, VAX Shutdown page on the web.)

Check airconditioning and recycle as necessary to get it going.
You will not be able to call maintenance on it when the
university is closed, or on weekends.
To manually control power on, use the power switch on each processor.
On UNDHE4 also be sure the Qbus expansion box below the
	processor is also on.
If all power for the system went off, the disks must be spun up.
This usually will happen automatically. If not, the
power switches may have to be set off and then turn on
	to spin them up.
After power up, all nodes will go thru their self-tests and then
attempt to reboot. If power on is from a restoration
of building power, only the boot node UNDHD0 will actually
start booting. The other nodes will attempt ethernet
boots until UNDHD0 has started DECnet. At that time
they should successfully start booting. If any node fails
to boot for long enough or for some other failure, it will
halt with the >>> prompt on its console. Enter "B"
(with ) to start the boot. If the boot node does
not boot promptly, halt the satellites until the boot node
is up; then boot each with "B".
If power was off only to the boot node, the satellites may need
to be halted first. If the satellites were shut down, but
not powered down, each must be halted before it can be booted.
If the boot node outage has been less than an hour, the boot node
may be rebooted into the cluster without halting the satellites.

The 8mm tapes and disks may be powered on before or after the processor
to which each is attached. The tape and disk drives should be
on before VMS actually starts loading, as that is the time that
	VMS determines what devices exist.

On the VAXstations, the screen will remain black thru the startup.
A minute or so after the startup finishes, the X-Windows software
will start and turn the screen gray and present a login box.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOGIN until the login box appears, or part of
the screen will be unavailable and you will not be in Xwindows.
The only recovery from a partial screen is a full reboot of the
	VAXstation.

If there are mounting problems with any disk, see the Mount Verification
	Note.
