$ HELPND will supply help for the UND HEP specific features.
Recent updates: WHATSNEW, MAConVAX, MimeMail, NDdialup, HEPppp.
HELPND is gradually migrating to the web - link from the UNDHEP home page.
Older HELPND documents on VMS will not be updated.
Please log out when you are gone over the weekend or longer.
Logging back in really does not take that long.

Backups have been scheduled on the VAXes for alternate Wednesdays, starting
whenever the drives are available, and running into Thursdays as needed.
Backups will be scheduled on the IBMs and SGIs on the same schedule.
Plan tape use accordingly. Next backup date is Nov. 4.

Some Unix disks are now available on VMS; /u6 and /usr/local, in particular.
Do $ df on VAX to see the device names; then use VMS syntax for directories.
Some Unix aliases are automatically set up, as are a number of Unix utilities,
including gzip, tar, uuencode/decode, ghostview. If a command does not
work with -modifier, try it without the -.
Internet mail no longer needs the smtp% and "s, except if setting forwarding.
Mosaic will now display Postscript files with Ghostview.
Netscape 2.02 is now available on VMS: invoke it with $ NETSCAPE. For later
versions of Netscape (4.06), you must be on Unix (AIX).

The HP LaserJet 5M is now available on Mac and VMS. There are still
   problems on the Unix side, so do not use the VMS queues to the ps1 printer;
instead use the local LJHEP/LJHEPASCI queues.
   For Mac, see HELPND HPLJ5M_INSTALL.

We have configured an old pc as a ppp server for HEP. The present modem
lines have been relocated to this system. You need your NIS (RS/6000)
id and password to log in. See HELPND HEPppp.

The system disk on UNDHD0 died Monday, 8/24. The system was reinstalled
on top of the D0 disk DU01, which was later restored to a subdirectory on
DU03. D0News & D0local are available as before. The department printers
are available as before (use $ prq a to check names).
The substitute system disk DU01 died late Monday 10/26. The system has
been restored on a loaner disk. When a permanent replacement is received
the system will be moved to the new disk. This loaner disk will not
backup, so transfer to a new system disk may take longer than desired.
This new system disk installation will happen some evening soon after
   the new disks arrive.
The 2 disks that died, DU00 and DU01, were the original disks on UNDHD0
and were out of warranty; and the manufacturer is out of business.
