Backups have been scheduled on the VAXes for alternate Wednesdays, starting whenever the drives are available, and running into Thursdays as needed. Backups will be scheduled on the IBMs and SGIs on the same schedule. Plan tape use accordingly. Next backup date is Sept. 23.
Some Unix disks are now available on VMS; /u6 and /usr/local, in particular.
Do $ df on VAX to see the device names; then use VMS syntax for directories.
Some Unix aliases are automatically set up, as are a number of Unix utilities,
including gzip, tar, uuencode/decode, ghostview. If a command does not
work with -modifier, try it without the -.
Internet mail no longer needs the smtp% and "s, except if setting forwarding.
Mosaic will now display Postscript files with Ghostview.
Netscape 2.02 is now available on VMS: invoke it with $ NETSCAPE. For later versions of Netscape, you must be on Unix (AIX).
Outside DECnet is no longer available: you must use Internet for mail, telnet (only local SET HOST), and ftp (instead of copy). See HELPND DECNET. The NDMAIL gateway (inbound as undhep.dnet.nd.edu) is no longer available.
The new HP LaserJet 5M is now available on Mac and VMS. There are still problems on the Unix side, so do not use the VMS queues to the ps1 printer; instead use the local LJHEP/LJHEPASCI queues. For Mac, see HELPND HPLJ5M_INSTALL.
There will be some further minor reconfiguration of the VAXcluster. DU53 has been removed from UNDHE5 and have been moved to UNDHE4 as DU43. DU43 has been emptied of E687. DU52 has died (the last of the Magtron cheapies), so /se on DU52 is unavailable except from backup tapes. DU53/E687 also is on backup tape. The libraries currently on DU40 will eventually move, probably to one of the UNDHE9 disks, but logical names will be changed so that access is unchanged. An extension of the DU02 user home directories will be created on one of the UNDHE9 disks. UNDHE5 and UNDHE7 have been shut down, probably permanently.
The ND campus dialup has been reconfigured, with more ports. See HELPND NDdialup. We have configured an old pc as a ppp server for HEP. The present modem lines have been relocated to this system. You need your NIS (RS/6000) id and password to log in. See HELPND HEPppp.
If you use Netscape mail reader on any platform, see HELPND NETSCAPEBUG or the D0News article. Our IBMs will be updated when it is available.
The system disk on UNDHD0 died Monday, 8/24. The system was reinstalled on top of the D0 disk DU01, which was later restored to a subdirectory on DU03. D0News & D0local are available as before. The department printers are available as before (use $ prq a to check names).
